Hansal Mehta returned to the Television industry with Scam 1992, a web series which is based on the stock market crash of 1992 in India. Earlier he directed Bose: Dead/Aive. The inspiration comes from a book The Scam: Who Won, Who Lost, Who Got Away, Scam 1992 by journalists Sucheta Dalal and Debashish Basu. It is already on the top spots and being tagged as the best web series of the year.
Let’s take a look at all the characters of the series and their real-life counterparts:
1 Harshad Mehta
Portrayed by Pratik Gandhi, who is the lead in the series and has already won over the masses and critics with his excellent performance. From the devil may care attitude to the distinguishable personality traits of Harshad Mehta, Pratik Gandhi was on Point with the characters stockbroker’s mannerism.
2 Ashwin Mehta
The character of Ashwin Mehta is played by Hemant Kher. Ashwin Mehta who also was a stockbroker in his brother’s firm. He pursued for lawyer’s degree in his mid 50s and later was acquitted in the year 2018.
3 Jyoti Mehta
Anjali Barot played the role of Jyoti Mehta, Harshad Mehta’s wife. Later in 2014, Jyoti Mehta took a Mumbai Based broker to court and sued him for a sum of 6 crore that he owed to Harshad Mehta since 1992 and apparently won the case in 2019.
4 Sucheta Dalal
Shreya Dhanwanthary portrayed the role of author and journalist Sucheta Dalal. She was the person investigating the Harshad Mehta Scam in 1992 while working with TOI. She later pursued her career on investigating and reporting several high-profile financial fraud cases which included scams like the Industrial Development Bank of India Scam, the Enron Scam and the 2001 Ketan Parekh Scam. She is also a Padma Shri recipient and the co-author of the book The scam, the book on which this series is based.
5 Debashis Basu
The other author of the book The scam and husband of Sucheta Dalal, Debashis Basu’s role is played by Faisal Rashid. He was another journalist who also investigated the Harshad Mehta Scam in 1992. He now is running the fortnightly investment magazine called Moneylife.
6 Manu Manek/Manu Mundra
The character of Manu Mundra is played by Satish Kaushik and in the series Manu Mundra is based on Manu Manek, who was also a kingpin of the stock market in the 80’s also known as Black Cobra. It is also rumored that Manu Manek was the man behind the biggest cartels, the marwadi Bear Cartel during 80’s. It is said that he was in close competition with Dhirubai Ambani but the cartel soon saw its end. Manu Manek was never booked in any of the stock market scams.
7 Maheshwari based on Radhakishan Damani
Maheshwari played by Paresh Ganatra, is adapted from the life of Radhakishan Damani a businessman and investor who is also the founder of DMart. He was linked to both scamsters Manu Manek and Harshad Mehta, the infamous stock manipulation experts, though he was not accused of any scam. Quit the Stock Market in 2000s and is the second richest person in India with a net worth of $17.8 billion.
8 Rakesh Jhunjunwala
Played by Kavin Dave, Rakesh Jhunjhunwala who is apparently the king of stock market in present times. With the downfall of Harshad Mehta after his arrest, the stock market was taken over by Rakesh Jhunkhunwala. He often credits Damani for his knowledge about the stock market and considers Radhakishan Damani as his mentor.
9 Ram Jethmalani
The character of Ram Jethmalani is played by Mithilesh Chaturvedi. The lawyer and former Rajya Sabha member, who also was the head of the legal team that represented Harshad Mehta and defended him.
