Veteran Bollywood actor, best known for his outstanding performances in ‘Bobby’ and ‘Chandni’, passes away Mumbai hospital on Thursday morning. He has had a magnificent career in the world of Hindi cinema spanning over four decades.
He made his way into the hearts of millions of fans with his charm and flawless acting in his debut film ‘Bobby’ in 1973. He was diagnosed with cancer in 2018, after which he underwent treatment in New York. For almost a year, he stayed in New York and came back to India in September 2019.
On Wednesday morning, he was rushed to Sir HN Reliance Foundation Hospital in Mumbai after he complained of uneasiness.
Griefing over the loss of his co-star, Amitabh Bachchan shared a post on Twitter and Instagram. He wrote, “Rishi Kapoor… gone… passed away. I am destroyed !” Later, the tweet was deleted.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted and expressed his grief. Calling him ‘a powerhouse of talent’, PM added, “He was passionate about films and India’s progress. Anguished by his demise. Condolences to his family and fans. Om Shanti.”
Sri M Venkaiah Naidu, India’s vice President, tweeted he was “deeply saddened” by the veteran actor’s demise. He wrote, “The talented actor essayed many roles with aplomb and was popular for his romantic films. In his passing away, the nation lost a beloved son and film industry lost a gem.”
The Kapoor family issued an official statement which reads, “Our dear Rishi Kapoor passed away peacefully at 8:45 am IST in hospital today after a two-year battle with leukaemia. The doctors and medical staff at the hospital said he kept them entertained to the last. He remained jovial and determined to live to the fullest right through two years of treatment across two continents. Family, friends, food and films remained his focus and everyone who met him during this time was amazed at how he did not let his illness get the better of him. He was grateful for the love of his fans that poured in from the world over. In his passing, they would all understand that he would like to be remembered with a smile and not with tears. In this hour of personal loss, we also recognise the world is going through a very difficult and troubled time. There are numerous restrictions around movement and gathering in public. We would like to request all his fans and well-wishers and friends of the family to please respect the laws that are in force. He would not have it any other way.”
